The crew arrives first. Before a single note, before Garcia walked onstage — the roadies were already at work. This is what it looked like that night: the mighty Wall of Sound taking shape at Winterland, panel by panel, speaker by speaker, while two early arrivals stood on the floor and watched.

The Wall stood over 40 feet high and weighed close to 75 tons. It required a semi-truck convoy and a day-and-a-half of labor just to assemble. Steve Parrish — Garcia's longtime guitar tech and one of the Dead's most legendary road crew members — is in this frame, taking a well-earned puff.
