“ These are beautiful photos of Dylan. I was actually at one of those shows and remember well the vibe. Love your other photos as well, especially the ones of Jerry Garcia.”

ABOUT PLAYING IN THE BAND
VINTAGE ROCK PHOTOGRAPHY
A treasure trove of rock history has emerged from the personal archives of 8-time Emmy nominated National Geographic filmmaker Ron Bowman. Dozens of forgotten negatives --many shot in color which was rare for concert photography of the era -- capturing the explosive energy of 1970s concerts by the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith and others. Bowman photographed these headliners when he was just a teenage rock and roll fan armed with his trusty 35mm Nikon and a burning passion for live music.
"It all started during the pandemic, when I finally had time to wonder: what had become of those images I shot some 50 years ago? I was nervous opening that box in storage, half-expecting to find degraded trash. To my relief, the Kodak negatives-- color and black-and-white-- were still pristine, full of rich tones and detail. But even more remarkable, it was a time capsule transporting me back to a very exuberant time in my life. When we were young, live music could be so transcendent-- a guitar solo could move you to tears; every moment felt so urgent and alive."
These images reveal the raw power of these legendary, live performances through the lens of someone who would go on to become a master visual storyteller. Fleeting moments of musical magic transformed into stunning photographic art, capturing an extraordinary era in music history—and now, for the first time, are available for collectors and music lovers to own.
