Pure joy. That was Donna Jean Godchaux at Winterland, San Francisco, 1970s.
Before she ever set foot on a Grateful Dead stage, she'd already sung on two number one hits — Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" at Muscle Shoals in 1966 and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" in 1969. She brought that same soulful authority to the Dead from 1972 to 1979, adding backing and lead vocals.
